Former President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio died today, aged 81.
A law graduate of the University of Lisbon, President Sampaio having served his country as Mayor of Lisbon (1990 – 1995), President of the Republic (1996 – 2006) and , the wider world as High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (2007 – 2013), and lately as founder and Chairman of the Global Platform for Syrian Students.
His legacy includes an impressive footmark in Portuguese foreign policy, particularly in significant moments such as the transfer of Macau’s sovereignty to the People’s Republic of China and the ensuring that the self-determination of Timor-Leste would become a reality.
